Murallas de San Carlos
Following the sacking of Cadiz by the Count of Essex in 1596, the inhabitants saw the need to raise city walls to protect against further assaults. With the exception of the land frontage, the rest of the walls were constructed on the shore to protect against invasion from the sea.
Walls, now, form part of the idiosyncrasy of Cadiz and serve as a source of pride for the city.

This square was built in the mid-19th century, on the site of the old vegetable garden of San Francisco convent. It was converted into a public area after the sale of church lands conducted by Mendizábal.
The latest rehabilitation in 1991, respected the 19th century aesthetics that characterise the square, which has always been a favourite spot with Cadiz residents of all ages.
